Android is a tremendously diverse open source operating system. And because of Google’s third-party distribution model, the number of cellphones running Android is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years.

The comparison between iPhone/iPad and Android is essentially the same as Apple computer compared to Microsoft. One manufactures both hardware and operating system and thus having more control over integration (iPhone/iPad and Apple) whereas the other just creates a really good operating system and disseminates it into hardware everywhere (Android and Microsoft).  Currently, Android holds the largest chunk of the worldwide smartphone market share, and if Microsoft is any example, Android has nowhere to go but up and would be an extremely prudent choice for a foray into mobile applications.
